In mechanical processes, many components play different roles in the overall process. One of them is a rotary pressure filter.
What is that? It is a continuously operating filter for pressure filtration used in many applications.
In the rotary pressure filter, there is a cylindrical drum, which rotates in a horizontal direction in a pressure-tight housing.
The drum is divided into different segments, and each segment has a filter cloth or a filter mesh.
In high pressure rotary unions, a feed pipe is used for feeding into the drum. The suspension gets distributed over the entire length of the drum.
When the drum rotates, the liquid phase passes through the filter medium and is discharged as a filtrate.
On the surface of the filter medium, the solid accumulates and forms a cake. This can be treated further in various ways depending on the usage and application.
This pressurized suspension enters the first filter chamber through the feed pipe. It filters because of the pressure difference, which is a driving force in the filter unit chamber immersed in it.
The filter cake gets gathered on the exterior of the filter insert. The filtrate passes through the filter screen.
The inner drum in the rotary pressure joint rotates clockwise sequentially. Because of this, the filter cake enters the sealed chamber after filtration. The filtrate in the filter cake is replaced by washing liquid in a single-phase.
Finally, the washing liquid discharges through the washing liquid chamber in the distribution head through the drainpipe.
As the inner drum rotates, the filter unit room that contains the washed filter cake enters the filter cake drying sealed chamber. The filter cake dries by hot air that passes through the filter cake.
After that, hot and humid gases pass through the exhaust pipe, and it get discharged through the dry gas chamber in the distribution head.
When the dry filter cake unloads from the filter unit room, it enters the filter screen flushing sealed chamber when the inner drum rotates. The residual filter cake, which is blocked in the filter screen gets washed away when the flushing liquid flows.
As the inner drum rotates, the cleaned filter unit enters the filter sealing chamber and pushes the next cycle of filtration washing of filter cake, drying of filter cake, discharge of filter cake, and flushing of filter cake.
We can say that the filter works continuously with various functionalities in various sealed chambers. When each filter unit rotates, with the respective inner drum, it enters different functional sealed chambers and completes the functionality.
Conclusion
A rotary pressure filter is a filter that operates continuously for the purpose of pressure filtration. The fundamental purpose of it is to allow gas-tight cake treatment to happen in multiple steps. This can be a single-stage or multiple-stage process of cake washing and drying. It is possible to discharge the cake under atmospheric conditions. The range of applications of these filters is quite wide. It is used in a long array of applications and industries worldwide.
